BRUCE SPRINGSTZINE 1: WEEKEND IN THE VOID takes place in Toronto, on Canzine weekend last October. I flew in from Vancouver, and had exactly 36 hours from touchdown to takeoff again. What follows is a detailed report on that day and a half of sleep deprivation, self-abuse and small pressery. Sometimes vague and deranged, sometimes lucidly hung over, this is an honest report, complete with hand written field notes, of what happens when a writer (Joey Comeau) and a publisher (myself) attempt to stay up for 36 hours, fueled mainly on energy drinks, little orange pills, and pharmaceutical grade tequila.

CANADA PARTY [24 Oct 2008|09:26pm]

This is the place to be, people. Google it, there are all sorts of things happening and Joey and Emily and Roadie Wike and I are planning on being there, selling things, signing things if people want Joey's chicken scratch signature on their books I spent so long making look nice. There are readings and other events that involve people we don't really care for, and so you'll see us interrupt them with drunken harangues.

I'm telling you, you don't want to miss it. If you're not in Toronto, hop a bullet train. Bring pills.

Apathy and Paying Rent - Two bad things are now one good thing. [01 Oct 2008|07:19pm]
Brothers! Sisters! Friends! Mild Acquaintances who I speak to only on the internet or when I'm good and drunked up!

I would like to take a moment of your time and direct your attention to:

It is, as you will see, a website.  Not only that, but it is blog, or Blog, or "blog," depending on your opinion of this, our beautiful and ever changing English language.

Not only is this post about a website, but it is also about a book! With the same name as the website!  A book being published by The Loose Teeth Press, in a very short time, 4-6 weeks to be exact.  And, like all Loose Teeth books, you can read a large part of it online for free, because we don't value our products very much.  What?  No!  I mean, because we value art and ideas and culture and things like that. Etcetera etcetera!

So:  Here is the skinny.

The Skinny:
 - The website is going to be updated every Monday, Wednesday and Friday with a new chapter of the book for 6 weeks.
 - That's 18 chapters.
 - The book is 36 chapters.
 - (That's half.)
 - We would like very much for you to read our internet offering and then scroll back to the top of the page and click the red ORDER button.
 - If you do that you'll have to give us $12.95, but I promise we'll spend a decent portion of it having fun.

Thank you for listening to a man with a head cold, who may or may not have taken too many drowsy time pills.

Mayor, Teeth Town.

If you visit http://www.lockpickbook.net you will see a link to a PDF file. This file is the full 10 chapters of Lockpick Pornography, as it appears in the book. Download it, read it, email it around, upload it to your server, do with it whatever you want. It's yours now.

John Campbell made this. He also made a little comic book with us last year. He is hilarious and his LiveJournal is stereotypist.

When you sell a book on your website called "Lockpick Pornography" your Google search results have things like this in them:

1. pornography
2. lockpick pornography
3. boyfriend is always leaving
4. fucking labia
5. little boy porn
6. wake him up blowjob

It's amazing to think I'm not kidding.

Today is Sunday, and although it's freezing out and the hot water radiators in my apartment seem to be full of water the colour and temperature of three day old tea, it is a Good Day because I have a staff party to go to in two hours or so, and staff parties, to me, are like Dungeons and Dragons or LoTR novels to nerds. Full of magic and mysticism, only instead of elves and warhammers or whatever I'm finally going to meet the Great Wizard Free Booze.

If you count Sunday as the last day of the week, rather than the first, like I do, then that makes two Good Days this past week because I took Tuesday off and I slept in right until I got a call from a delivery driver saying he was outside my house and would I please come out and sign some papers. What he dropped off was this:

or at least the taller, darker brown part of it. It's the new book by The Loose Teeth, Legitimate Art. Like the last book, it's a comic compilation. 200 comics from the website www.AnimalsHaveProblemsToo.com.

If you pre-ordered the book over the last few months then your order is on it's way along with a free poster. We have been trying to ship things all week, and it is great fun. The books weigh just over a pound each.

This pile of envelopes weighs more than I do. They also seem to be staring at my skateboard but not using it, much like I do! In the upper left hand corner you can see some of the envelopes gravitating away from the skateboard toward a pile of unread novels: oh, messy life!

This is a photo of the new book on my coffee table. The coffee table came with the apartment and the first time my girlfriend Tanis saw it she said, "That looks like the kind of coffee table you roll joints on." And she's totally right. My friend Kent had a table just like it, and that's what he used it for. That and his giant feet.

The book is just over 200 pages long, it is glossy, and it is 7" x 8", which is really big.

We are selling this book on our website, which is something we do with all of our books, because we heard the Internet was a good place to make a buck. You can buy it here:

for $18 postage paid. If you're into deals you can buy it with the A Softer World comic book for $32, which means you save $10.

In a month or so we're going to have a new book to tell you about, and around the same time Forget Magazine will be relaunching on its 6th birthday. There will be so much great shit on there that you won't have time to back over the last 5 years worth of amazing shit, so you should do that now. Visit the archive page and read: The 31 Days of Kelly Gruber. Read Matt Rader and Nick Thran if you love poetry. Fuck, read 'em if you don't. Read SEAWORLD or LOVE II by Craig Battle. Just go and get your fill and then get ready.

Happy Birthday, Jerk. [06 Nov 2006|11:18pm]
Loose Teeth turns one year old in less than a month.  In that year we've published a novella, a comic anthology, and a comic chapbook, totalling just over 7,000 individual books.  We've done readings up and down the east coast from Halifax Nova Scotia to New York, and we've sold books to people overseas in at least 25 different countries (the love us in South Africa, actually).
To celebrate we thought we'd get tattoos, but then we remembered Mike already has a tooth tattoo, Joey has the A Softer World frame, and Emily has that one that says "BOOK PERV." So instead we're doing two things: One, Mike is having two of his teeth pulled (and hopefully mounted), and two, we're selling a package that includes:
   (1) Lockpick Pornography: Loose Teeth Collection cover (limited to 200 printed; very very sexy.)
   (1) Stevie Might be a Bear, Maybe (pretty much everyones favourite thing)
   (10) Loose Teeth bookplates (2 layer silkscreen in 4 colour combinations. self-adhesive.)
   (4) Stickers (A Softer World full colour sticker, Loose Teeth hot air sticker, two Lockpick Stickers.)
   (2) 1" pins (A Softer World "Being in love is totally punk rock" and one new one.)
All of this in a spiffy little hand made package.
To buy this in the online store would be over $30 bucks (some of it isnt even for sale, though).  Drive it away for $20.  Actually, for $20 we'll mail it to you.

When publishers get books back from a printer, there are always extras; usually about 10% more than you asked for. They say that these are in case there are mistakes in the copies you actually ordered, but then they charge you for the extras too, so if there are mistakes, you're still paying for those books! This is just the way it goes.

When we printed our first issue of Pine Magazine in 2004 a bunch of copies were missing about 8 pages. The Lockpick books ended up being all AOK, but now we're starting to find some A Softer World books with defects in the covers. Right now I've got about 10 copies of ASW with covers that have smudges or weirdnesses in the matte coating. There are also about 5 books that have some light spray paint dusting on them from being in the wrong place at the wrong time! Obviously these books can't be sold in stores, so I'm offering them here for $14 postage paid instead of $24. Keeping in mind that it costs $6 to ship these books and PayPal takes about a dollar a copy, that's a $20 book for $7.

The insides of these books are totally fine and even the covers are still pretty, they're just not perfect, and they need to be perfect to go into stores. So. Here's your chance to get one of these suckers super cheap. I figure they'll all be sold by the time I wake up tomorrow, so don't sleep on this!

...and we were about halfway when I woke up, 5:30 this morning, the sun finding its way through the mangled blinds and crawling its way around my bedroom / office. Soon that's going to have to be switched around to office / bedroom though. This weekend brought with it some friends from the East, a drug binge, and, when it was all over, a new computer. The old one has been relegated to sitting on my bed so I can swivel around and grab email addresses or bookmarks off it, just like my bookshelf I bought to fill up with all my novels I left in Victoria last year is now full of contracts and 1" buttons and stickers and copies of A Softer World and spare printer cartridges and old receipts and...

Mike is looking for photos of people holding Loose Teeth stuff to use on the Loose Teeth website, on Myspace, in print ads and that sort of thing. If you want to get in on this all you have to do is send in photos of you or your friends holding onto a copy of Lockpick Pornography, A Softer World or Stevie Might Be A Bear, Maybe.

Pictures should be either:

Digital: 300 dpi, colour or black & white. Email those suckers to photos @ looseteeth.ca

Old School: colour or black & white, mailed to our tree fort:
1669 E 13th Ave
Vancouver, BC
V5N 2B7

As always, nude photos are sent directly to Joey Comeau for review.

Joey and I are in Toronto now, leaving tomorrow at 7am for New York after having spent the last few days drinking beer with Derek McCormack (http://www.ecwpress.com/books/hillbilly.htm) and loitering around the Coach House Books printing rooms getting schooled on how books are actually made by Stan, the dude who runs the show there.

On Saturday and Sunday we're going to be at the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art (594 Broadway, between Houston and Prince) selling copies of the newest addition to our family, A Softer World: Truth & Beauty Bombs, which just so happens to be a collection of comics. On Sunday at 6:30pm Joey will be reading from Lockpick Pornography at a bookstore in Brooklyn called VoxPop. The address is 1022 Cortelyou Road, Flatbush, Brooklyn, and I am told this is a very fun place to be, with a cafe that serves beer and wine built right into the place.

If you live in Toronto and you missed the Small Press Fair last weekend you can pick up any of our books at This Ain't The Rosedale Library (483 Church Street) which was named one of the top 10 bookstores in the world in The Guardian book section a few months ago. Now we know why.

And if you don't live in Toronto...smart move.

Joey Comeau, Loose Teeth Press superstar, is on CBC radio national today. He'll be talking about his books and our trip we had last May where we got robbed by homeless people in New Orleans. Maybe he'll mention doing ecstacy in San Francisco and trying on new sweaters (best feeling ever?) but probably not because his mom will be listening. The show starts at 2 PM in every timezone, so if you miss it you can just wait an hour and listen to it in the next zone. Go to the website and click on a city!

Who knew going to University could get you somewhere?

No, really though. We just called them and said we had a book out by one of their grads and did they want to help promote it, and they did! They sent this press release out to every newspaper in the country, and THE GLOBE AND MAIL called back for christ's sake.

About a third through his next novel, VandeZande lately has been focusing on AHPT. This summer indie publisher Loose Teeth is producing Legitimate Art: An Animals Have Problems Too Collection, a compilation of his first year's work as well as 25 new comics and fresh commentary.

Big ups from the Houston Chronic (WHAT!) cle. Read the article on our boy Zach VandeZande and his weirdo name here.
